PFD Patches in Laser Tattoo Removal: What the Evidence Measures

Understand the clinical question

Perfluorodecalin-infused patches have been investigated as optical-clearing accessories during selected laser tattoo-removal procedures. The outcome measured matters: visible frosting, number of laser passes and total appointments are not interchangeable.

What one controlled trial found

A 2017 split-tattoo trial with 30 participants used a 755 nm nanosecond Q-switched Alexandrite laser on predominantly dark blue or black tattoos. In a five-minute period, investigators completed an average of 3.7 passes with the studied patch versus 1.4 without it. This does not establish that every patch permits the same pass count or reduces total treatment sessions.

Match evidence to the laser and patient

Laser wavelength, pulse duration, pigment and skin type influence how applicable a study is. A small four-patient eyebrow tattoo case series with a picosecond Nd:YAG laser is not equivalent to a controlled trial or proof of universal compatibility.

Review the exact accessory

NovaClin Labs lists a PFD Skin Protection Patch measuring 10 × 10 cm, with 10 patches per box. Confirm manufacturer instructions, composition, handling, storage and documented compatibility with the intended laser before clinical use.
